The Bowen Technique
- reseting the body to heal itself
The Bowen Technique may very well be one of the single most important tools we have to facilitate healing of the whole body. Since the Bowen Technique addresses the body as a whole unit rather than just the presenting symptom, it embraces the physical, chemical, emotional and mental aspects of each person receiving a treatment. Simply stated, the Bowen Technique resets the body to heal itself.
The Technique balances and stimulates energy flows, resulting in a deep sense of overall relaxation. The restorative process begins once the body is relaxed, and continues as the body allows. Healing seems to occur by affecting the body's autonomic nervous system, which creates homeostasis at the cellular level. The practitioner is merely a catalyst, setting the stimulus in motion for the body to heal itself.

It differs from traditional massage techniques in that Bowen utilizes cross-fibre muscle manipulation, which, in turn, seems to create a deep sense of relaxation. The work consists of a series of gently rolling connective tissue moves, using a light touch and may be done through clothing. The moves bring about incredible results by penetrating to a deep cellular level, releasing toxins and old patterning accomplish holistic balance almost immediately.
By combining moves, both in placement and in combination, the practitioner is able to address the body as a whole or target a specific problem. A unique tool of the Bowen practitioner is "tissue tension sense," meaning the practitioner is able to discern stress build-up in muscle groups and then utilize Bowen moves to release that stress. The work is very subtle, relaxing and gentle involving no hard or prolonged pressure. There is no deep tissue work or high velocity thrust movements as in chiropractic.
Can the Bowen Technique help me?
In its essence, a Bowen treatment resets the body to heal itself. Since we each have the ability to heal ourselves, Bowen is useful for everyone from newborn infants through the elderly. It is effective as a remedial therapy for those overcoming sports injuries, accidents and other ailments. The Bowen Technique improves rehabilitation time, regardless of how old or recent the injury may be. Chronically ill patients benefit as well as the disabled.
No other treatments
The Bowen Technique is a jealous and possessive therapy. From the perspective of understanding how it works, it is important not to mix up the signals that the brain is being asked to interpret. The most fundamental principle of Bowen is that it is the client that is doing the work, not the therapist and for this to happen the body needs time and to be left alone. This is not to say that other treatments are in some way less valid or powerful than Bowen, but simply that we need to give any process a chance if it is to be effective.
There are no such things in this life as guarantees and this can be said of Bowen as well. The beauty of it is that it is simply offered to the body. If the body accepts it then it can and will start the process of repair. If it doesn't accept it then no harm is done. You can't really say fairer than that. As Meng Tzu, said "The way is near, but men seek it afar. It is in easy things but men seek it in difficult things."
